On Friday, April 3, 2026, over 70 people packed Pacific Avenue in San Pedro to celebrate the grand opening of Wah Gwaan’s newest location. It was more than a ribbon cutting. It was a community saying: we are glad you are here.

It Started in the Family

Every great restaurant has an origin story, and Wah Gwaan’s begins the way the best ones do, around a table, with people who kept saying, “you should open a real kitchen.” Deandra’s husband, a gifted chef whose Jamaican cooking had been feeding and delighting family and friends for years, eventually listened. What began as an idea became a first location, and the community responded with open arms.

That success was not the end of the story. It was the beginning of a bigger one. Excited by the warm reception and a growing loyal customer base, Deandra set her sights on expansion,a second location on Pacific Avenue in San Pedro, a street she believed in deeply.

“I am going to bring Pacific Ave back to life,” Deandra has said. And she meant it.

The San Pedro Chamber of Commerce was there to show their support. Representatives from LA County and Supervisor Janice Hahn’s office attended to offer their congratulations. The Mayor of San Pedro joined the celebration. And a representative from Councilman Tim McOsker’s office, District 15, was present to mark the occasion alongside the community.

Their presence said something important: this was not just one family’s grand opening. It was a neighborhood choosing to invest in itself, one small business at a time. Pacific Avenue felt exactly the way Deandra always believed it could.
